Finish Me

Written: Spring 2006

Take the human from me so I’ll never disappoint you

Polish me so I can match your glow

Quick, before I tarnish you, like all my other precious possessions

Sand down my pointed edges, my roughest spots

So if I slip I’ll never hurt you

Don’t place me up too high above you

So I can survive a fall

Secure my thoughts and make them steady

So I’ll never have to ask your forgiveness

The greatest shame I can imagine

A More Deserving Place

Written: January 09

When i meet you
maybe you’ll erase
every other touch from me
every other face

When i meet you
maybe i’ll forget
how it feels to lose
why i fear regret

maybe i’ll grow to love you
because you’ll live passionately
and you’ll be missing pieces
missing pieces just like me

maybe when you’re gone
you’ll leave in your place
paths that i’ll keep running
faint lines that i’ll still trace

and i’ll spend a season sighing for you
trying to forget your face
your smile, your gait
your grace

i’ll have to tell my bones to stand
muscles to twitch and pull
lungs to fill
and empty when full

tell my mouth to smile
my feet there are steps to take
that we’ve walked this way before
hands, not everything you touch will break

March will turn to April
May will turn to June
I’ll have tell my mind to wait
My heart will recover soon

then maybe i’ll grow to hate you
because you live recklessly
because you’re weak
because you’re weak like me

and I’ll remember the feeling of regret
like walking but my socks are wet
not keeping me from moving
just not letting me forget

that i took a wrong step
i took a wrong step
~~~~
and when its hard to breathe
i’ll have to look outside to see
there are greater things to grieve
there are worse things to be
that the worlds too large for Karma
my problems too petty for grace
and if there really are such things
there’s a more deserving place
Morning Ritual
I share my life (and studio apt) with two of the most amazing cats I’ve ever met.  My glorious 5 year old Half-Persian Tabbies.
P&D
Puck and Dinah have very distinct personalities. Dinah, the Calico, prefers direct and to-the-point techniques to get what she wants. Puck, like his mommy, thinks anything can be solved with the correct application of cuddles.
Just to make sure I start my day in the most relaxed way possible, my loving partners in life make a concerted effort to wake me up in a natural, gradual fashion.
4:00 AM: Aroma and Sound Therapy Dinah spends some quality time in the sand box. She likes to start off with quiet sand noises but eventually works her way up to scraping her claws along the sides of the box… after 5 or 6 minutes of this she moves to the walls and molding.  The high pitched noises are supposed to lift me out of REM sleep. It also sometimes gets me vocalizing early. DDDDIIIIINNAAAAAAHHHHH!
5:00 AM: Nature Sounds cardboard boxes and plastic bags provide a panoply of sounds by which P&D can prevent me from falling into a deep sleep.  Puck prefers to bring out pieces of plastic that I missed on my nightly patrol and chews them loudly under the headboard. This close proximity also allows him to get in for a quick head rub when I reach down blindly to grab it from him. Dinah chooses the farther away option of playing the cardboard box. Around this time the heat might come on to add percussion and whistles to the mix.
5:15 AM: Quick Wet Purring Muzzle in the Ear … pretty self explanatory. A primitive but effective technique courtesy of Puck
6:00 AM: Persian Massage  to make sure I get proper circulation going, Puck usually starts with my rump and works his way up to my neck with gentle but expertly placed paws. Then he blankets him self across me for a nice broad application of pressure wherever he thinks I need it.  I must say his heat and vibrating feature is quite pleasant but also unnecessarily loud.
6:45 AM: Alarm Goes Off - despite the fact that I generally snooze for an hour this is the signal that mother is UP!  Which means meowing at full voice and demanding snuggles is now perfectly acceptable.
By the time 7:45 rolls around I’m refreshed, feeling great and ready to start my day! Like in the commercials! You know, the ones where people wake up smiling and stretching instead of weeping softly or cussing and in their haze wondering dramatically how life could possibly be worth living when they have to WAKE UP every day.  Cause those are totally realistic…
